Louie Alas itinalagang interim head coach ng Ateneo

Itinalaga si Louie Alas bilang interim head coach ng Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team.
Ito ay kasunod ng pagbibitiw sa puwesto ni Tab Baldwin kaugnay ng pagkamatay ng mga basketbolistang sina Rene Baterbonia at Divine Adili sa isang team-building activity sa Dipaculao, Aurora noong Hunyo 8.
Si Alas, na sumali sa coaching staff ni Baldwin noong 2024, ang pansamantalang hahawak sa programa bago ang UAAP Season 89 na nakatakdang magsimula sa Setyembre.
Gayunman, wala pang pinal na anunsyo mula sa UAAP o sa unibersidad kung lalahok ang Ateneo sa darating na season.
Kilala si Alas sa matagal niyang karanasan sa coaching matapos humawak ng iba’t ibang posisyon sa PBA, NCAA, at Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), kung saan nakamit niya ang ilang kampeonato. Siya rin ang ama ni NLEX guard Kevin Alas.
Sa isang pahayag nitong Sabado, sinabi ng Ateneo na ang interim appointments sa coaching staff ay naglalayong magbigay ng katatagan at gabay sa mga natitirang miyembro ng koponan.
“It reflects the University’s continuing duty of care to the student-athletes who continue to carry the emotional weight of this loss. Supporting them through this difficult period is an important part of the healing process for the rest of the team,” pahayag ng Ateneo.
“These appointments should not be understood as a signal that we have moved on from the tragedy of losing Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili. Nothing about these interim appointments diminishes our grief over the loss of Rene and Divine nor our concern for the Baterbonia and Adili families. Those commitments remain steadfast,” dagdag nito.
